Date Ideas for Creative Couples #1 – “Chopped”

I bet you have been looking for a way to mix up your normal dinner-date night, and get creative with your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/roommate (whoever you eat with) haven’t you?!   Michael and I came up with the most fun way to do this!  This is one of our favorite dates.  If your TV station of choice is the food network like mine is, you probably already know where this is going… Chopped is a show on TV where a group of competitive chefs comes together to be challenged to make something delicious out of surprise ingredients like beets, catfish, and star fruit that you have to use together with other more standard ingredients that the kitchen is stocked with.  The challenges can get pretty weird.  You can make it as weird or stay as safe as you want.

How we do it:

First: Decide on what you will be making for you challenge; will it be an appetizer, a dinner entree, or a dessert?  This time, we chose to do dessert.

Go to the grocery store, where you each have to pick out 2 ingredients without letting the other know what you are picking.  Make it as challenging as you like.  Michael and I usually each pick an ingredient that isn’t too common, but isn’t too bizarre either, along with an ingredient we’ve cooked with before, so we are guaranteed to know how to use at least half of our ingredients.

"Chopped" Date

Go home and get started!  Each of you make a dish using all of the ingredients the two of you chose, and you can add in any other ingredients you have at home.  Don’t look up any recipes!  That would make things way too easy!

Once you are finished with your dish, you can have someone judge your dishes, or you can skip the competition and dig in.  We usually have a roommate around who is more than happy to taste our creations.  Judge based on: Use of ingredients, presentation, and taste.

'Chopped'-Finished And the winner was: Michael’s cookies with my sauce on it!  Our judge should also win for thinking to put the two together.  I think Michael wins based on the fact that he made flowers out of kumquats.  Okay, I’ll admit, he usually beats me at this.  But stand by for our next date! I won’t tell you what it is yet, but let me tell you, I think I could win this one…

Oh my gosh Natalie! I absolutely LOVE this idea!! I’m sure you know, food network is my “TV Station of Choice” also. It’s pretty much the only TV show we watch around here and Logan and I both LOVE watching chopped!! This may just be the very best most awesome date night idea I’ve ever seen (And I’ve seen and tried an awful lot of date ideas! haha). I love that this is a great way to spend time with your significant other, and a good way to get creative and also a way to put all that “food network watching” to good use! Great job! And both your creations are amazing! I wish I could taste them!! Great Job! Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!!
